Did you know...
Crayons stock the pencil cases and backpacks of our students on a daily basis. Did you know that the largest manufacturer, Crayola, produces approximately 13.5 million crayons a day?
Knowing this, just how big is one million?
Think about how your child would see this number in their brains. Can you see it? What are some difficulties you encounter when trying to understand this number.
Watch the short clip below of children trying to explain their understanding of one million.
Connecting large numbers, such as one million, to a real-life experiences (crayons) supports students in making sense of the number and helps them visualize it in a real-world setting.
As Marilyn Burns states, "Our goal is to help children think, reason, become numerically proficient and learn how to use what they are learning in school to solve problems."
These connections are vital to the mathematical success of our students. How are you supporting these connections?
