Tips for Parents

As your child practices, practice with them! As you do so, encourage their efforts and celebrate their successes!

Questioning invites thinking. Support your child by asking open-ended questions such as:

-What was the first thing your brain saw/did/understood?

-What would be a good estimate before you begin to solve?

-Can you explain to me how you knew to  _______?

-Is there another way to solve this?

-What did you notice about ________?

-How are these ____ the same/different?

-What would happen if....?

-How would you explain how to do this to a (one grade below your child)?

Allow your child enough time to think through the problem and attempt it in various ways.

Communicate to your child that the process of solving a problem may take longer than expected. Therefore, it is ok if they have to take more time to think and need to come back to the problem later. A prompt such as this will support your child in doing so:

"I can see that this problem requires a lot of thinking. Let's let our brains continue to think about it and come back to it later."
